Hypercalcemia Secondary to Antibiotic-Eluting Calcium Sulfate Beads

The use of calcium sulfate beads (CSBs) as a carrier for local delivery antibiotics is increasingly reported the treatment localized infections. They are used most commonly in bone and joint infections, post-trauma diabetes-related foot wounds, vascular grafts. Hypercalcemia rarely with CSB but an important safety concern, patients at higher risk should be identified prospectively followed carefully postoperatively. This case report details 85-year-old male who developed severe, symptomatic postoperative hypercalcemia after antibiotic bead placement right knee. He presented confusion, weakness, lethargy, was subsequently treated fluids, calcitonin, alendronate. patient quickly returned to normal mental status, levels normalized, leading discharge. review literature describe incident severe attributed antibiotic-eluting CSBs factors time course that may expected.
